About Swedish Massage
Swedish massage is one of the most common types of massage taken in Western Europe. Swedish massage combines various hands-on techniques including gliding, kneading, and cross-fibre friction to break up muscle knots, called adhesions.
It is based on the Western concepts of anatomy and physiology as opposed to energy work. It can be slow and gentle, or vigorous and bracing, depending on what you wish to achieve. Swedish massage is performed by a qualified therapist who lubricates the skin with massage oil to treat the whole body.
The father of Swedish massage and physical therapy is Per Henrik Ling (1776-1839) of Smaaland, Sweden, a physiologist and fencing master. In the early 19th century he developed a system called "Medical Gymnastics" which included movements performed by a therapist. These became the known as "Swedish movements" in Europe and "the Swedish Movement Cure" when they were imported to the U.S. in 1858. Today it is simply known as Swedish massage.
Mike is a massage practitioner qualified in holistic Swedish massage with the International Register of Massage Therapists. He has experience working with male and female clients including athletes, busy executives, young mothers, manual workers, keen gardeners and many more. Every client is unique and Mike's knowledge and friendly, sympathetic style will allow you to take what you need from your massage - recovery from tight, tense muscles, relief from aches and pains caused by past injury or bad posture, or just a break from everyday stress.
Mike’s interest in complementary therapies has grown from his love of yoga and curiosity about connections within the body and between the body and psyche.
Based in Greenwich, south-east London, Mike works from his home which is within easy walking distance of Deptford Bridge DLR station and Greenwich mainline station. Off street parking is available.
What to expect
Mike will take time at your first treatment to provide a free consultation to gather relevant medical and lifestyle information. He will also discuss with you any preferences you have such as focus on particular muscle groups and massage pressure. Please allow 15 minutes for your initial consultation; it will not reduce your treatment time.
Mike uses a range of quality base massage oils containing the finest quality natural ingredients, organically-produced and cold-pressed where possible; he never uses massage oils containing artificial fragrances, preservatives or other chemicals.
At the end of the treatment, you will be given ample time to “come to” and offered water to drink – your treatment will remove toxins from your body and rehydration is highly recommended to avoid the risk of slight headache afterwards. A shower with toiletries and towels is also available for you to use should you want to.
Payment and cancellation
Cash payments are simplest. If you prefer to pay by credit or debit card, please let Mike know when making your booking so that he can let you have a PayPal invoice in advance. Cheques are not accepted.
Should you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, please call 24 hours in advance so the session can go to another client. Cancellations received with less than 24 hours’ notice may be billed at 50% of the cost of the booked treatment. “No shows” will result in the full treatment cost being charged to you before further massage treatment can commence.
